‘Hairspray Jr.’ opens at NPMS this weekend

New Prague Middle School opens its 2016 spring musical "Hairspray Jr." on Friday, April 8, with the first of six performances.

The musical about accepting others will have shows at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, April 8 and 15, and two shows, on Saturdays, April 9 and 16, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. at the middle school auditorium, 721 Central Ave N.

"It has wonderful music and it has a really relevant story," said Nicole Thietje, music director at the middle school. She is taking care of the music and choreography for the show, which features a little more than 95 students from the middle school and St. Wenceslaus School.

The story line is set in 1962 Baltimore, MD, and the main character is plump teenager Tracy Turnblad, who wins a contest to be on a local dance program. Tracy finds herself dealing with several issues, including the Civil Rights Movement.

Thietje noted the teachers and the students did discuss putting on the production. "Hairspray Jr.," based on the Broadway and movie adaptations, calls for a diverse cast. Thietje said they did....
