70 attend Elko New Market meeting on school boundaries

Approximately 70 people attended a meeting at Eagle View Elementary School Thursday, Nov. 18, regarding a proposed change in elementary school attendance boundaries.

Under the proposal, about 200 students from the Lonsdale area would be switched from Eagle View, in Elko New Market, to Falcon Ridge in New Prague. That includes 88 resident students, with the remainder open enrollment students. The plan also calls for some Raven Stream students to switch to Falcon Ridge and a group of current Falcon Ridge students who live east of Highway 13 in Cedar Lake Township to move to Eagle View.

Board member Larry Pint explained that growth in the Eagle View area is expected to put the building at capacity (700 students) next school year, while Falcon Ridge is seeing a continuing decline. Parents were told that there would be a process for students to transfer their children to another district school as long as there was room in the building.

There will be a second meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Falcon Ridge Elementary School, 1200 Columbus Ave. N., in New Prague.
