9th inning homer gives Orioles win

James Fuerniss hit a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give New Prague a 5-2 win over Watkins in the opening round of the State Class C Baseball Tournament in Norwood Friday, Aug. 18. 
Jake Klein had three hits and scored two runs. He started the ninth inning rally with a base hit. He had earlier scored the Orioles’ first run on a wild pitch. Justin Novak and Fuerniss both ahd two hits. 
Nathan Sprouls started for New Prague and allowed just four hits in 7-1/3 innings, but he did not figure in the decision. Trevor Smisek - draftee from Montgomery, was the winning pitcher. He came on in relief with the score tied and one out in the eighth inning and struck out three batters in 1-2/3 innings.
New Prague’s next game will be at noon Sunday, Aug. 27, in Norwood against Chokio, the champions of Region 9C.
