Acting their age... or not?

Diane Hrabe, Staff Writer

An unusual event is happening at New Prague High School this Friday. Four sophomores - Kyle O'Laughlin, Samantha Goblirsch, Devin O'Brien and Rachel Rhoten - are turning four? Actually, they will be 16, but they were among the lucky ones to share a February 29 birthday, which generally comes around every four years. (2000 was an exception to the rule as no February 29 was on that calendar, but Leap Year babies still count it anyway.)

The four didn't know they shared birthdays with each other until The Times called to check on possible Leap Year celebrants at the high school. Finding four Leapers in one class made an even better story.

Kyle Gabriel O'Laughlin

Kyle Gabriel O'Laughlin, son of Mary O'Laughlin of Elko New Market and James O'Laughlin of Belle Plaine, also shares a Leap Year birthday.

Barely nudging the scale at only 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and 21 inches long, Kyle was born at 6:15 a.m. at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, one of an unbelievable 13 babies born that day (the daily births at that time was five).

I never really thought of it as a special birthday for a good while
