Alvin Hertaus, 79

Alvin W. Hertaus, 79, of New Prague, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague.

Born October 22, 1929, in Wheatland Township, Rice County, Al was a son of William and Elizabeth (Marek) Hertaus. He attended Veseli School, St. Wenceslaus School and New Prague High School. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War. He married Diane Dvorak on August 9, 1958, at St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague. He worked in New Prague until 1983 when they moved to Le Center, later returning to New Prague about 1993. Al owned and operated the Rainbow Cafe in New Prague before starting Fashion Flowers and then Fashion Interiors. Operating the interiors business for 20 years, he was also in real estate and insurance sales for 30 years. Al was instrumental in starting the New Prague Volunteer Ambulance Service. He was a member of the American Legion and commander of the Le Sueur County Council, VFW, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and the Lonsdale Lions.

He is survived by his wife; children William (Annie), Veseli, Ronald (Lisa), New Prague, Renee (Randy) Wawrzyniak, Glencoe and Alan (Kerrie), Le Center; siblings Francis (Bella), New Prague, Raymond (Joyce), New Prague, Roman (Jan), Prior Lake, Lorraine Kes, Shakopee and Dorothy (Clarence) Skluzacek, Lonsdale; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters Deborah Hertaus in infancy and Sandra Marie Hertaus, age six; two grandchildren Katie Rose Hertaus and Riley Wawrzyniak; his parents; a brother William Hertaus in 1945; and brother-in-law Tom Kes.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 21, at 10 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague, with Rev. John Lapensky, Rev. Ray Monsour, Rev. Steve Trewartha and Deacon Len Shambour officiating. In attendance will be the New Prague Military Honor Guard, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, members of New Prague Ambulance, New Prague veterans and Lonsdale Lions.

Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in New Prague, with military rites to be conducted. Pallbearers will be Myles Malecha, Fritz Horejsi, Clarence Jirak, Alvin Edel, Lyle Braun, Jim Shambour, Roger Zaun and Bob Wolf.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague. A Lions prayer service was held at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, with parish wake prayers at 5:30 p.m.
