Alvin Svoboda, 91
Alvin J. Svoboda, 91, of Belle Plaine, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.
Alvin was born in New Prague on May 5, 1919, a son of John A. and Ida (Ruhland) Svoboda. He attended St. Benedict School and was a farmer. Alvin married Julia Horejsi on April 22, 1944, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, the Knights of Columbus Council and Rural Fire Association. Alvin enjoyed playing cards and entering euchre tournaments.
He is survived by children Norman Svoboda, Longwood, FL and Roman (Evelyn) Svoboda, Monticello; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings Virginia (Jim) Scanlon, Tucson, AZ and Sam (Marian) Svoboda, Bloomington; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Svoboda and Martha Svoboda, both of New Prague.
He was preceded in death by his wife on July 27, 1996; his parents; and four siblings Ralph (at age 3), Jerome, Lloyd and LeRoy Svoboda.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 14, at 11 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague, with Rev. Kevin Clinton officiating.
Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in New Prague. Pallbearers will be Matthew Svoboda, Andrew Svoboda, Joshua Svoboda, Adam Svoboda, Elizabeth Velasco and Julie Hanson.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague.
