Ambroz wins state title in figure skating

Cale Ambroz took first place in the Preliminary Mens Freestyle program at the Minnesota State Figure Skating Championships, held at the Burnsville Ice Arena August 25-28.

Cale, 11, belongs to the New Prague Area Figure Skating Club. He is a sixth grader at St. Wenceslaus School in New Prague and the son of Chuck and Cindy Ambroz of Webster. He is coached by TJ Pendergast of New Prague and also Lorie Wallace of Savage.

To compete at State, skaters must be at least at the Preliminary level, which requires two double jumps and one axel. He has been skating hard this past spring/summer to be ready to compete at State, which also meant passing Moves In The Field and Freestyle tests held in early morning hours.

During the winter months his home ice is at the New Prague Area Community Center. During summer months he skates mostly at Dakotah Ice Arena in Prior Lake, and sometimes at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

For placing first, Ambroz was invited to a recognition dinner, to an Exhibition Skate at the Bloomington Ice Garden in February, 2006, and to the Campbell’s International Figure Skating Classic, to be held in October at the Xcel Energy in St. Paul. Cale will be a floor sweeper, where he’ll pick up the flowers thrown on the ice and hand them to the skaters.
