Annual School Art Show opens Thursday at library
By Patrick Fisher
The New Prague Student Art Show will begin Thursday, April 28, at the New Prague Public Library with a special evening of events.
Opening night for the eighth annual show, sponsored by the New Prague Arts Council, will be from 6-8 p.m. and will offer cookies and punch. Also, on hand will be special guest artists, John Busacker and brothers Paul and Dave Kamish. The three will be drawing caricatures of people and teaching those attending how to draw.
Steve Bruchman, Director of Community Services for the New Prague Area School District, said opening night for the show has attracted hundreds of people over the last few years. Last year’s event drew approximately 780 people and in 2003, there were about 900.
Bruchman said there will be 125 to 150 or more art pieces on display at the show, which runs through mid-May. The art has been chosen from those made by students at New Prague Area Schools, St. Wenceslaus School, Kids’ Korner and Kids’ Company.
Among the displays will be those included in an art project done by local artist Mike Leek and students at St. Wenceslaus, working with the school’s art teacher Leah Zvanovec. The project had the students draw their favorite places in New Prague. There were 40 drawings that were brought to the Arts Council whose members selected from those and placed them in a booklet called Hometown Images. The booklet, which also has a few art pieces done by adults, will be available at the art show.
