Another impressive group of graduates

New Prague High School held its 2017 commencmenet exercises Friday, May 26.

One of the highlights for me each year is getting the chance to work on the Senior Graduation Souvenir Section that showcases members of the graduating class. This was the 25th one I’ve worked on during my two stints at The New Prague Times, and each year I meet some amazing young men and women who are about to enter one of the most exciting times of their lives.

This year, I met some exceptional seniors and interviewed them for stories. One of those seniors, Maizie Deihl, is someone I’ve covered as an athlete as a fiveyear starter on the Trojan girls basketball team. Over the years, I became aware that there was a lot more to her than just being a basketball player. She took part in music and drama activities and has been accepted into the honors program at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she will also compete in basketball.

I interviewed John Bowman, and I found him to be one of the most mature and driven young men I’ve had the chance to talk to in this situation. John had some rough times earlier in his life and wound up in New Prague living with an aunt and uncle. Several years ago, he set some ambitious goals, and he has spent his high school years exceeding those goals. His positive attitude and drive helped him earn an ROTC Scholarship to the University of Florida, fulfilling a dream he had long ago when he was growing up in the Sunshine State.

The Times wishes these seniors, and all of their classmates, the best of luck as they enter the next stage of their lives.

* * * * * We are smack dab in the middle of playoff season for spring sports, and two Trojan teams are playing this week with high stakes. The Trojan softball team will play Farmington Thursday at Todd Park in Austin for the Section 1AAAA championship and their third state tournament trip in four years. This team has proved to be resilient as it has compiled a 21-3 record, coming up with big innings to overcome early deficits throughout the season. Good luck to first-year Head Coach Anna Borwege and the squad. We hope to see you playing in Mankato next week.

Meanwhile, the Trojan baseball team has a survived a rough beginning of the season and appears to be gelling at the right time. This, despite losing their top starting pitcher, Will Forberg, to an arm injury.

Sean DuBe’ , also a firstyear head coach, has compensated by asking his pitchers to give their all for two or three innings at a crack. That move appears to have paid off as they upset No. 2-seed Rochester Century twice this week and are in the Final Four of the Section meet on Saturday. They will take on Lakeville South at 11 a.m. in Dundas.

Other teams still in action: The boys and girls golf teams were to start Section 2AAA play on Wednesday, with the top teams and top golfers in each section advancing to next week’s section finals, and the Section 2AA Track and Field meet are being held Wednesday and Friday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
