Archery range is in the works

With approval from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), New Prague can begin work on an archery range.

New Prague City Planner Ken Ondich said work on the new sports area hasn't begun yet, because a final plan for constructing the area is still being finetuned. The city hopes to complete the range by this fall. The overall cost for the project is $8,000, with part of that amount covered by a grant.

The archery range will be 100 feet wide by 300 feet deep, located north of the ice skating rink that is part of Sliding Hill Skate Park, 1501 Columbus Ave N, and west of the New Prague Wastewater Treatment Plant. Those using the range will be shooting to the northeast and a 5-foot berm will be located behind the targets.

The city needed an OK from the DNR for grading the shooting range to level it out. There will be 12 different targets set at varying distances - from 10 yards to 100 yards. Multiple targets will also be set at 20 yards, a popular shooting distance for those involved in the sport.

Ondich said the path already leading to the Skate Park will be extended to the archery range. Also included will be picnic tables and signs explaining the rules and outlining the boundaries of the range.
