Area anglers looking for stable weather

By Bill Bartusek

As we near the middle of June we are looking for some stable weather.

The fishing though has been pretty good. I’m not sure what the fish think, but we should be entering the early summer period. Water temperatures have varied a lot. A week ago they were in the 70 degree range. Now they are in the 60’s. The fish are probably getting used to the changes because there have been so many.

Pan fish are in the post spawn mode and have headed for their summer homes. These areas are deep weed points and edges not far from the spawning areas. They will also start to set up camp on weedy humps with some deeper water nearby.

The northern pike are still cruising the new weed lines. The deeper the edge the better chance for a big fish. Spinner baits and spoons are probably your best bet to harvest these fish.

Walleye fishing has slowed in our area as the fish hunker down in the weeds. Night fishing is your best bet to get into some action. That’s not the case at Lake Mille-Lacs. The bite there has been just super. People are catching lots of fish and quite a few are keepers. The big fish that are above the slot limit have been really hitting too! The action is almost as good as the bite a few years ago. If you want to catch walleye, that’s the place to go.

Another supper destination in Red Lake. The walleye their have really made a comeback and everyone is catching them. Even anglers on shore have had some good success. It’s only a 2 fish limit, but you will catch a lot of fish.

Bass fishing in the area has been sporadic. I will get my first taste of the action next Saturday at Lake Marion in Lakeville. It’s time to defend our title at the annual Jaycee tournament.

See you there at 1 o’clock.
