B. Beatrice Koschade
B. Beatrice Koschade, 87, of Davenport, IA, died peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport. Beatrice was born June 21, 1926, in Detroit, MI, a daughter of Russell and Bertha Esther Weiland. After graduation from Denby High School in Detroit in 1944, Bea continued her studies at Capital University in Columbus, OH, studying pre-med and music. She was an accomplished contralto soloist, with her voice often being compared to that of Mariam Anderson. She transferred her studies to Detroit Institute of Technology (now a part of Wayne State University), where she became a member of the Lambda Kappa Sigma Sorority and was graduated with a BS in Pharmacy in 1944. She was commissioned as a missionary in September of 1949, and arrived in Madang, New Guinea in October, where she served as a pharmacist and lab technician. She married Rev. Alfred Koschade on December 5, 1951, in Lae, Papua, New Guinea. She and Alfred retired from the mission service in December of 1956. The family came to America in 1957, settling in Iowa where Alfred had received a call as pastor. They served in two congregations in Iowa. Alfred accepted a call to St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery in January of 1962. She was licensed in pharmacy in the states of Iowa and Minnesota, where she served as a relief pharmacist. In 1979, she purchased Lonsdale Drug Store, which she owned and operated for 10 years. After selling the store, she continued working as a relief pharmacist until she retired her license in 1993. Writing and publishing “Esther It's Easter” was her loving tribute to her daughter. Alfred retired from St. John in December of 1993, and they stayed in Montgomery until 1995, when they moved to Eldridge, IA. In 2011, Alfred and Bea moved to Longmont, CO, to live near their son Mark. They were in the process of moving back to Davenport when her husband of 61 years died. She moved into an apartment at Silvercrest, where she was living at the time of her death.
