Barbarian wrestlers compete at several tournaments

The Barbarian Wrestling Club of New Prague competed in the MN/USA Wrestling Freestyle and Greco-Roman state tournaments May 22 and 23 in Rochester. The Club practices the Olympic styles of wrestling in the spring, and is coached by Greco World Gold medalist Mike Houck and freestyle All-American Tony Gansen. New Prague had 15 wrestlers compete over the weekend, the most in team history.

The Barbarian Team placed fourth out of 44 teams in freestyle competition. Individual placings included: Second place-Griffin Parriott and Trevor Westerlund; Third Place-Tanner Rutt; Fourth Place-Logan Kass; Fifth Place-Max Scheffler, Cael Berg and James Berg; Sixth Place-Jarek Tikalsky, Nicholas Knutson and Nathan Preston. Also competing were Alex Scheffler, Andrew Maruska and Patrick Zeimet.

The Barbarian Team placed second out of 44 teams in Greco-Roman. New Prague individual Greco-Roman results: Second place- Parriott, Preston and Knutson; Third Place-Westerlund and Rutt; Fourth Place-James Berg, Richard Reinartz, Alex Scheffler and Logan Giles; Fifth Place-Max Scheffler, Cael Berg and Kass.

New Prague had six athletes compete in the Northern Plains regional tournament Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5. Wrestlers from seven states competed in both Greco and freestyle. Westerlund earned first placed at 105 pounds; a prestigious tournament to win. Individual placings are listed below. There are few schools that have six boys competing in Northern Plains.
