Bartelt throws no-hitter for Legion team

Ben Bartelt threw a no-hitter against St. Peter and New Prague’s Post 45 American Legion baseball team edged Northfield to remain unbeaten on the season.

Only three runners reached base against New Prague, all on walks, as Bartelt struck out eight hitters in his no-hitter.

New Prague grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Goldsmith doubled and Kyle Kalina singled and then stole second. Josh Simon followed with a two-run single. He stole second and advanced on a groundout, then scored on a ground ball by Kevin Kalina.

In the fourth inning, with two outs, Kyle Kalina singled and stole second. Simon drove in a run with a base hit, and also stole second. Matt Ambroz got an RBI single , advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Kevin Kalina reached on an error.

New Prague got one more run in the sixth inning when Kyle Kalina walked, advanced on an error and scored on a base ht by Kevin Kalina.

Goldsmith, Kyle Kalina, Simon and Ambroz had two hits each, while Tyler Seurer, Eric Bisek, Jon Beckius and Tyler Bergstrom each had one.

New Prague 8, Northfield 7

Beckius went 3-for-3 and had a sacrifice to lead New Prague to an 8-7 win over Northfield Thursday.

Seurer got the win, throwing seven innings, and Dan Meger pitched two innings of relief to get the save.

New Prague took a 1-0 lead in the second when Seurer reached on an error, stole second and third and scored on a groundout by Adam Gill.

Northfield took a 2-1 lead in the second with the help of an error and a hit batter, but New Prague make it 3-2 in the third. Beckius and Goldsmith both singled and Kyle Kalina sacrificed them to second and third. Kyle Bergstrom drove in two runs with a base hit.

Northfield tied the game in the bottom of the third and took a 5-4 lead in the fourth. New Prague tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning. Gill led off with a single and stole second. Meger reached on an error and Beckius drove in a run with a sacrifice fly that was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing him to reach base as well. Kyle Kalina drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly.

New Prague scored three runs in the top of the eighth in the nine-inning game. Beckius got a one-out single and stole second. He scored on a double by Goldsmith. Kyle Kalina reached on an error, scoring Goldsmith, and Kalina came home on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth, the first two hitters reached base, so Meger came on in relief. Both of those runner scored, but Meger shut the door after that, leaving runners stranded on second and third.

In addition to Beckius’ three hits, Goldsmith and Kyle Bergstrom had two hits each, while Bisek and Adam Gill had one each.

Seurer went seven innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, five of them earned. He struck out four. Meger allowed three hits and walked one, but gave up no runs and earned the save.

June 16, at Northfield

Games rescheduled

Only two of four games scheduled were played last week. The June 17 game against Lakeville was postponed because Lakeville’s High School team was playing in the state championship game that day, and Monday’s game at Woodbury was postponed due to rain. The team was scheduled to face Apple Valley at home Tuesday.

In addition, the game scheduled for June 24 at Lakeville was also postponed. Both Lakeville games will be made up as part of a doubleheader in New Prague Monday, July 18. A previously scheduled game with St. Peter that day was cancelled.

No makeup dates have been set for the June 7 game at Faribault or the June 20 game at Woodbury.

New Prague’s next game will be Monday, June 27, when they host Hastings. On Wednesday, June 9, they play at Jordan and Thursday, June 30, they host Faribault.


Legion team upsets Apple Valley

New Prague’s Post 45 American Legion baseball team upset the Apple Valley 76ers 2-1 in a non-league game at Memorial Park Tuesday.

Dan Meger’s two-out single in the seventh inning scored Eric Bisek from second base, giving New Prague the win. Bisek scored the other New Prague run earlier in the game, with a solo home run.
