Barten Breakfast to benefit Emma German

The Roman Barten Memorial Breakfast will benefit Emma German, daughter of Chris and Keriann German of Belle Plaine. The sixth annual breakfast is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the New Prague KC Hall, 411 Fourth Ave. SW.

In August 2010, Emma, age 6, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a cancer that develops from immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body. It most commonly affects young children. Doctors found that the disease had spread through her body.

Her parents and loving, protective big brother, Brady, 8, other family members and friends call her "Amazing Emma, Warrior Princess," as she’s been fighting the cancer with humor, strength and grace.

When going through her treatment, Emma’s smile and giggle stayed with her through intense chemotherapy, kidney failure, surgery, and a stem cell transplant. Emma remained upbeat, positive and hopeful through long hospital stays. She entertained herself with puzzles, painting and tricycle races with nursing staff.

After one year, all tests came back negative, but last December, the cancer returned. Emma has begun treatment of chemotherapy and radiation. The German family professes a strong faith and positive attitude as Emma continues on her journey back to health.

The family of the late Roman Barten organizes the breakfast to continue his legacy of community service. He lived for his 11 children and taught by example to reach out to others.

The breakfast of pancakes, sausages and cinnamon rolls will be a free will donation. There will also be a children’s activity center at the breakfast.

Fran Barten said they have many volunteers helping. Among them are Chris’ co-workers from Rahr Malting Company and Brewers Supply Group in Shakopee. Volunteers are also coming from Strait Smiles Family Dentistry in Belle Plaine, where Keriann worked before Emma became sick. Fran said her family members are also coming to help, including son Mark from Connecticut.

If unable to attend, people are asked to send prayers and donations, which can be sent to: Emma German Benefit, c/o State Bank of Belle Plaine, 201 W Main St., Belle Plaine, MN 56011.
