Bernice A. Zelenka, age 91

Bernice A. Zelenka, age 91, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, at her home Thursday morning, April 6, 2017. Bernice was born April 25, 1925, in Erin Township, Rice County, MN, to Frank M. and Josephine (Pumper) Machacek. She grew up in the Lonsdale area, attending school at Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

On September 6, 1944, Bernice married George J. Zelenka also at Immaculate Conception Church and they made their home on a farm outside of New Prague. Bernice entered fully into farm life, helping with all aspects of farming and making a home. In addition, she also cooked at the KC Hall for over 40 years. In her early years, she was an avid league bowler and an accomplished seamstress, sewing for friends as well as her own daughters, which included making their wedding dresses. Her kolacky were award winners and playing cards rounded out her leisure activities. Her greatest joy, however, came from time spent with her family.

Bernice is survived by her daughters, Julie Borene of Northfield, Joan (Chuck) Kartak of North Branch, Nanette (Dale) Washa of Montgomery; sister, Agnes Kratochvil of New Prague; sister-in-law, Ann Machacek of Forest City, IA; brotherin- law, Blasé Bisek of New Prague; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, George J. Zelenka on February 24, 2001; infant son, Robert; parents; brother, Norbert Machacek; sister, Elsie Bisek.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 8, 2017, at 12:00 Noon at Bruzek Funeral Home with Father David Barrett officiating. Visitation took place from 9:00 until Mass time. Burial followed Mass at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery with lunch immediately following at the KC Hall.
