Big changes in store for elementary schools

By Pat Pribyl, Principal

New Prague Primary School

As hard as it may seem to believe, the opening of the 2005-2006 is only a few weeks away. The first day of school for students in grades 1-12 is Thursday, Sept. 1.

This portion of the year is always an exciting and hectic time for families with school-age children. Along with the start of this new school year we will begin the process of getting ready for some big changes. This year will be the final year that our elementary buildings will operate as a K-2 and 3-5 grade level configuration. Beginning with the 2006-2007 school year all elementary buildings in the New Prague School District will have K-5 grade level configurations.

As the construction of the new elementary schools moves forward, the excitement and anticipation of what the future holds will increase. Staff members at New Prague Primary School are already working hard to get classrooms and curriculum ready for opening day.

On Tuesday, Aug. 30, New Prague Primary School and the New Prague Intermediate School will hold a Meet Your Teacher Night from 5-8 p.m. A new parent orientation will be held on Tuesday afternoon from 4:30-5 p.m. in the Media Center.

We would like to extend a very special welcome to all the parents of our 230-plus new incoming kindergarten students. We will be offering formal orientation opportunities for kindergarten students and their parents on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 1 and 2.

All kindergarten students and their parents will be receiving an assigned time and date to attend the 90-minute orientation session. It is very important that kindergarten parents and students attend this orientation, and that they bring completed immunization and registration forms with them. The first regular day of school for Group A and Everyday students will be on Tuesday, Sept. 6. September 7 will be the first official day of school for Group B students.

We would like to welcome to the community and school district several new staff members who have been added over the summer months at New Prague Primary School. Joining the faculty will be art teacher Kathryn Closure. She will take over for Teresa Hoverson, who accepted an art position at the New Prague Middle School. Another addition will be the hiring of Debbie Gregor on a half-time basis to teach physical education and music. The kindergarten teaching team will add two new members with the addition of Ashley Andrews and Amy Bowen.

If you have access to a computer, please take time to check out the school web site at www.np.k12.mn.us. Curriculum outlines, parent handbook containing policies/procedures, monthly newsletter, teacher information, lunch menus, and updated school closing information are some of the items available at this web site.

At the New Prague Primary School special emphasis will continue to be on teaching student responsibility, good listening skills, and treating each other with respect. Parents and community members can help greatly by being good role models and working on these areas at home. The entire staff at New Prague Primary School is looking forward to a very successful school year.
