Board explores options for moving elections

Over the past few months the New Prague Area School Board has discussed moving school board elections from odd-numbered years to evennumbered years.

The move was first discussed after a low turnout in the 2015 elections. The consensus among board members is that moving the elections to even-numbered years will not only increase participation by voters, but will also save the district money since they will not be saddled with all of the costs of elections.

At its November 14 workshop meeting, held at Falcon Ridge Elementary School, board members learned that holding elections in oddyears costs the district about $20,000, but the district’s cost would be about half that by holding them in evennumbered years, to coincide with the state’s general election.

Superintendent Tim Dittberner said only about 40 districts in the state hold their elections in odd years.
