Board hears report on parent survey

New Prague Area Schools Superintendent Tim Dittberner went over highlights from the annual District Parent Survey during a recent meeting of the New Prague Area School Board.

The survey was emailed to all parents in the district, and 1,089 parents responded to the survey, which is in its third year.

Parents were given a series of 32 statements and asked whether they strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with the statements.

Student safety, quality of education, transportation, child’s academic progress, superintendent communication and building and grounds were some of the topics that were measured in the survey.

On 14 of the 32 statements, 95 percent or more of the parents strongly agree or agreed with satisfaction in that area. Highest marks were for the following statements:

98 percent: • The environment at my child’s school supports learning. • My child’s school is clean and well-maintained.

97 percent: • The education offered to students at our school is of high quality. • Teachers use technology to engage students in higher learning. • My child feels safe at school.

96 percent: • I am satisfied by the steps the school district has taken to keep by child safe. • Overall, I am satisfied with my child’s school. • My child’s school provides high quality fine arts programs. • The teachers care about my child’s success. • If I have a concern, I know I can contact someone at the school who will be helpful.

Other high scores came in the ares of community education, approachable and accessible teachers, and helpful and welcoming environment in the school office.

The survey showed significant improvements from past years in several areas. This includes:

The school district provides healthy meal choices - 82 percent of parents strongly agreed or agreed with this statement, compared to just 74 percent in 2014 and 77 percent in 2015.

School to home communication keeps parents well-informed - 91 percent strongly agree or agree, compared to 84 percent in 2014 and 86 percent in 2015. My child’s teacher shares timely information with me about my child’s learning - 89 percent strongly agree or agree, compared to 82 percent in 2014 and 86 percent in 2015.

The teachers care about my child’s success - 96 percent strongly agree or agree, compared to 92 percent in 2014 and 95 percent in 2015.

I am satisfied with the guidance my child receives concerning what to do after graduation (for parents of grades 9-12) - 71 percent strongly agree or agree, compared to 62 percent each of the past two years.

Dittberner noted that there were two areas that saw declines this year:
