By Chuck Kajer

Bob Reed was elected chair of the New Prague Area School Board during the reorganizational meeting held Monday, Jan. 10.

Other offices include vice chair Dan Carlson, treasurer Tom Fadden and clerk Dennis Havlicek.

The board took care of other technical matters, including setting meeting dates for 2005, designated legal counsel and official depositories, and named The New Prague Times as its official newspaper for publication.

At the beginning of the meeting, Joan Anderson, intermediate school principal, briefed the board on her school’s plans for observing the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and Steve Bruchman, community services director, and Jessica Konken, enrichment coordinator, gave a report on the district’s programming in the areas of youth enrichment, early childhood family education and community education.

The board also set January 31 as the date for the sale of $35 million in bonds for construction of two new schools, set dates and agendas for standing committee meetings through June, and briefly discussed the school calendar process for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years. Superintendent Dr. Frankie Poplau said the opening of the 2006-07 school year may have to be delayed a week or two to assure completion of the construction projects.
