Boys earn pair of Missota wins
New Prague opened its Missota Conference boys basketball season last week with a pair of wins.
The Trojans (10-3, 2-0 Missota) defeated Prior Lake and Northfield and were slated to face Hutchinson (No. 4, Class AAA) at Hutchinson Tuesday. The tigers lost their first game of the season Friday against Holy Angels.
The Trojans have two home games this weekend, against Red Wing at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, and Austin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in a makeup game. New Prague travels to Farmington Monday, Feb. 1, for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Trojans 80, Lakers 66
New Prague opened the first half of a boy-girl double header on a winning note, defeating Prior Lake 80-66.
The Lakers led 23-22 when the Trojans went on an 11-0 run capped by a pair of three-pointers by Cale Girten and Alex Dittberner. The Trojans led by as many as 15 before the Lakers closed to within 10 at 44-34 at halftime. The Trojan lead varied from 10 to 16 points throughout he second half.
Danny Geiger led the Trojans with 23 points while Jed Kreuser and Girten each added 14. Nick Gerdes had seven rebounds and Geiger added four assists and four steals.
Also scoring for New Prague were Dittberner with 8 points, Gerdes with 7, Josiah Nunemaker 6, Joe Hatch 5, and Jake Meyer 3.
Trojans 48, Raiders 40
New Prague survived a physical game against a much bigger Northfield squad and came out with a hard-earned 48-40 win Friday in front of a packed black-out night crowd.
Prior to the game the team offered a moment of silence for former coach Jeff Gravon, who died a year earlier, and players and fans wore their black T-shirts with Gravon's quote Play like a champion
