Boys to face No. 1 Mankato West; girls take 3rd at state

The New Prague Trojan boys basketball team drew the proverbial short straw Sunday morning. New Prague drew No. 1-seed Mankato West for its first round opponent at the State High School boys basketball tournament.

The Trojans (21-8) and Scarlets (27-1) will open the tournament at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. Other first-round pairings have Rogers (18-11) facing No. 4 Spring Lake Park (23-6) at noon; Grand Rapids (25-3) vs. No. 2 Minneapolis Washburn (23-5) at 2 p.m. and Little Falls (18-11) facing No. 3 St. Paul Johnson (25-4) a 4 p.m.

Wednesday's winners play Thursday at the Target Center. If New Prague wins, they play at noon. The championship game is at 6 p.m. Saturday at Target Center, with the third place game at Concordia University at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Trojan girls basketball team finished its season with a 53-48 win over Totino-Grace to take third place at the State Girls Class AAA basketball tournament Saturday.

Junior Maggie Weiers had a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and Amanda Wagner had 11 points. New Prague forced 23 turnovers by the Eagles. The Trojans finish their season with a 27-5 record. Minneapolis North, which beat the Trojans in Thursday's semifinals, lost the championship game to St. Michael-Albertville 63-50.
