Boys hockey team tops West, loses to Richfield

For the second straight week, the New Prague/Montgomery-Lonsdale boys hockey team split a pair of games, winning at Mankato West and losing to Richfield.

Trojans 5, Scarlets 1

Mankato West scored first in this game, but it would be the only one they got as the Trojans responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 win over West at All Seasons Arena in Mankato.

Matt Ambroz once again led the way for the Trojans. The senior scored four goals, including one on a penalty shot early in the third period.

With the Scarlets leading, Ambroz scored on a power play goal at 7:47, with an assist going to Eric Bisek. Ambroz found the back of the net again, on another power play goal at 14:48, with assists going to Luke Hanzel and Ryan Witty.

Early in the second, Ambroz sprung loose for a breakaway and was tripped up as he approached the West goal, and the referee signaled for a penalty shot. On the play, Ambroz got the goaltender to move to his left, then brought the puck back across the net and backhanded it in to complete his hat trick at 3:05.

Ambroz scored another power play goal at 13:48, with Corey Hrabe getting the assist.

Hanzel scored the only goal of the third period, taking a pass from Ambroz and firing point-blank at the West goalie, who deflected the puck in the air with his stick and could only watch as it went over his head and dropped behind him into the net.

New Prague outshot the Scarlets 45-24. Josh Kajer, making his first start of the season, got the win in goal, stopping 23 of 24 shots.

Spartans 3, Trojans 2

The Trojans ran into a very hot Richfield squad, and did their best to try to cool them off in a game at New Prague Thursday, Dec. 2.

After a scoreless first period, the Spartans got a shorthanded goal on a breakaway just 48 seconds into the second period. The Trojans struck back immediately, with Witty scoring on the same power play at 1:49, with assists to Ambroz and Bisek.

Richfield scored again at 14:52 and went into the second intermission leading 2-1.

The Spartans made it 3-1 with a goal at 6:14, putting the Trojans in a bind. New Prague went on the power play with about two minutes left in the game and pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, and that strategy paid off as Witty scored his second of the night, from Ambroz, at 16:32.

New Prague had several chances in the final 28 seconds, but the Spartans held off the Trojans and took the win.
