Boys impressive in wins over Raiders, Stars

The New Prague High School boys basketball team won a pair of Missota Conference games last week, beating Northfield and Holy Angels.

New Prague (14-4, 5-2 Missota) are ranked No. 9 in Class AAA). They host Prior Lake in a non-conference game Thursday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The game is the second half of a boy-girl doubleheader. The Trojans then begin their second trip through the Missota Conference Friday, Feb. 11, at Chaska, then host Shakopee on Tuesday, Feb. 15. The Hawks and Sabers both beat the Trojans in their first meetings this season.



Trojans 65, Raiders 45

The Trojans dominated play from the start and led by as many as 38 points before the Northfield starters closed the gap against New Prague's second and third line players in a 65-45 New Prague win Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Five different players scored as New Prague jumped to a 14-2 lead. New Prague closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 34-10 halftime lead.

Then, in case there were any doubts, new Prague scored the first 14 points of the second half to open up a 48-10 lead. The Trojans had already gone deep into their bench in the first half and continued to go deeper, while the Raiders kept some of their starters in for the entire game. The Trojans led by 35 points at 54-19 midway through the second half, but Northfield kept plugging away, closing the lead to 20 by the time the final buzzer sounded.

Jed Kreuser led the Trojans with 21 points, while Cale Girten added 18. Also scoring for the Trojans were Trevor O'Brien (8), Joe Hatch (4), Alex Dittberner (4), Joe Soderlund (4), Joe Kneip (2), Jake Molitor (2) and Chris Hanson (2). New Prague shot 53 percent (18 of 36) from the field and 86 percent (19 of 22) from the line. Jake Meyer didn't score, but the junior center had nine rebounds and two steals for the Trojans.
