Boys snakebit at So. St. Paul
The New Prague Trojan boys hockey team appeared to be snakebit at the South St. Paul Premier Tournament, as the Trojans dropped all three games by one goal. As reported last week, New Prague opened with a 2-1 loss to Woodbury Saturday, Dec. 26. They lost in overtime to St. Paul Johnson on Monday, Dec. 28, then lost to Fond du Lac, WI, 4-3 on Tuesday, Dec. 29.
The Trojans (3-9-1, 1-2-1 Wright County Conference) entered the 2016 portion of their schedule winless in their last five games. They were scheduled to face Minneapolis on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Their next two games will be against strong WCC foes, as the Trojans host Holy Family Catholic (No. 4. Class AA) on Thursday, Jan. 7, and travel to Delano (No. 6, Class A) on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Governors 4, Trojans 3 Through regulation, New Prague and St. Paul Johnson had three goals and 27 shots each. However Johnson had the only two shots in the extra session, with the second one securing the Governors a 4-3 overtime win.
The Governors took a 2-0 lead with a goal in the first and one at 3:12 of the second.
New Prague scored twice in the second. Kyle Skaja scored on an assist by Nick Malz, at 10:06, then Luke Witt found the net on an assist by Isaac Fahrendorff at 14:31.
The Governors regained the lead at 8:17 of the third, but the Trojans pulled the goalie in the final minute and the extra attacker paid dividends as Alex Gregor scored on an assist by Witt at 16:23.
The Governors’ winning goal came at 1:10 of the overtime.
Graydon Skok was in goal for the Trojans, and stopped 26 of 29 shots.
