Breezing through summer

I must admit, summer break has never been easier! It is much different from those in years past –– mainly because we now have teenagers with summer jobs and their own drivers licenses. Cody, our oldest, stayed at MSU to take classes, so we rarely see him. Andy is never home now that he started working from sun up to nearly sun down, and most days you can find Alli either at her part-time job or hanging out with friends.

That means no more coming home to an entryway filled with 20 pairs of miscellaneous shoes belonging to a variety of friends hanging out to play X-Box and eating everything n the house –– all while another group of friends paint their fingernails and toenails on the dining room table, kitchen counter and living room floor, leafing through magazines and chatting so loudly no one can hear a thing.

No more sticky microwave covered in burnt marshmallows after someones attempt at Rice Crispy treats exploded. No more spa tub filled with bubbles to the ceiling after someone else dumped too much shampoo into it and then couldnt get the bubbles down the drain. No more children playing tricks on each other by slipping salt into the sugar bowl or glitter into the shampoo. An no more Twilightevery hour of the day.

No more rushing off to Lonsdale Little League games to cheer on the three separate baseball teams nearly every night of the week. No more Sponge Bob marathons, no more squabbles over who did what, and no more fireflies escaping their jars in the middle of the night and flashing us awake.

Life really has changed over the years. Our chalkboard that was once filled with drawings and humorous name-calling between the kids is now a way to keep track of work schedules arranging who gets the spare car and when. The changeover from kids to teens was a slow process, and its fun to think back on all the chaos that we once defined as home

Now when I come home and open the front door, I only trip over Simon (our dog), asleep in the entryway. And if the kids are around, theyre either sleeping, planning an outing with friends or watching Lostreruns on Netflix.

I must admit, it has been a very relaxing summer without any drama. So far. As every parent knows, family peace can evaporate quickly, which is why I am thankful for this lull in excitement and enjoying today.

So to parents at home with lively young children this summer: Hang in there and enjoy them now. Your day is coming.
