Brewers end Orioles’ tourney run

New Prague took an early lead, but was not able to hold on as the Jordan Brewers scored single runs in each of the final three innings to defeat the Orioles 6-4 in the third round of the State Class C Amateur Baseball Tournament in Delano Saturday, Aug. 31.

Justin Novak sparked the Trojans in both the first and third innings. Novak led off the game with a double, advanced to third and scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Bachman.

Jordan threatened in the top of the second, but Trent Simek was thrown out trying to steal home.

Jordan scored twice in the third to take the lead, but the Orioles took it right back. Novak drew a walk, then Dan Shetka singled and Bachman walked to load the bases.

After Dan Novak recorded the second out on an infield fly, Dan Ring grounded to short for what should have been the third out, but the shortstop lost his grip on the ball trying to toss to second for an error, allowing the tying run to score. Aaron Shetka followed with a bases-loaded walk to put the Orioles up 3-2 after three.

Jordan tied the game in the fifth inning, but the Orioles got the lead back in the sixth when Tyler Seurer tripled and scored on an error.

Jordan scored single runs in each of the final three innings. One of the biggest hits came from 53-year-old Paul Buss, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs against his former teammates. Steven Beckman went 4-for-5.

For the Orioles, Justin Novak and Dan Shetka both had two hits, while Bachman, Ring and Aaron Shetka had the others. The Brewers outhit the Trojans 15-7.

Dusty Beckius started for the Orioles and went 3-1/3 innings. Ben Morrison, draftee from Prior Lake, went 4-1/3 innings and took the loss. Bill Dunker, draftee from St. Patrick, pitched the final 1-1/3 innings.

Sartell went on to win the Class C Championship, defeating Belle Plaine 10-0 in the championship game Monday, Sept. 2.

Cold Spring won the Class B Tournament, defeating the Shakopee Indians 8-6 in the final game of the eight-team double-elimination tournament. Cold Spring had knocked Shakopee out of the winners bracket on Friday, but the Indians defeated Eagan on Sunday to make it into the championship round, then beat Cold Spring 5-1 to force a final game, in which Cold Spring prevailed.
