Can’t decide who to vote for? Do your homework

By Chuck Kajer

Back in 1984, I was living in Fillmore County and, having an interest in politics, attended my precinct caucus in Chatfield.

Being one of only a handful of people in the school auditorium, I became a delegate to the Fillmore County DFL convention that year. I had my preference for one senate candidate, and when a representative of another candidate came to speak to the convention, I listened carefully.

The candidate was a lifelong Minneapolis resident and longtime Hennepin County commissioner…a tough sell in a rural county. The representative, who seemed ill at ease talking and was mostly reading from a statement, said that the candidate was for the family farm. Seeing as how many of the delegates were farmers, it may have seemed like a safe enough statement.

My hand went up. I asked politely You say he's for the family farm
