Cancer survivor: ‘I am proof that your donations matter’

Entering high school can be emotionally difficult.

Navigating a new school that has just consolidated with another school district can make life tough.

Navigating the transition, while fighting cancer at 13 years old, makes life even tougher.

Navigating that journey through those obstacles was Megan Rabenberg, the daughter of Troy and Susy Rabenberg of Montgomery. Megan was chosen as this year’s Honorary Chair of the Le Sueur County Relay for Life that starts Friday, July 8 at TCU High School.

Megan’s journey began in May 2012 when she was diagnosed with a rare form of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma or Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), right before she entered high school at the launch of the Tri-City United High School.

“Starting high school was tough,” she said.

The first year of TCU brought new students from the Le Center District. She said making the transition was hard because she was in the throws of chemotherapy and was known as “the girl who has cancer”.

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t hide.

“It was obvious who I was the first day because I was bald,” she said.

However, the experience made her stronger and more confidant. She learned to live with the situation and make the best of it.

“I had to cope that I was different because I stood out. At first, I tried to fit in, not talk about it. But after a while, I figured I was going to live like this for a year, so I had to suck it up and try to be myself,” Megan said.
