Catching awards at Falcon Ridge

Four students from Falcon Ridge Elementary School received awards on Wednesday, Oct. 5, for fishing this past summer. The awards from the New Prague Sportsman’s Club and the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Youth Project were not for catching the biggest fish, but based on a photo of them with their fish.

Falcon Ridge phy-ed teacher Dan Wagner explained that since 2010 he has been encouraging children to go fishing over the summer. It allows the young anglers to bond with family, learn safety and it provides an activity for them to get outside. The only requirement is that someone take a photo of the students with their fish. The youths then bring the photos with them at the beginning of the school year. The pictures are then placed on a wall. This year there were more than 100 photos tacked up on the wall. Some students caught sunnies, others had a fish that fit in the palm of their hand and a few had fish that were nearly as large as them.

The New Prague Sportsman’s Club and the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Youth Project made donations so that every student who brought in a photo received a fish related prize such as plastic worms, a lure or other items.
