Cedar Lake Farms Park an exciting development

By Chuck Kajer

Scott County owns several county parks, but the news that the county is considering acquiring land for a regional park in the Cedar Lake area is exciting for the New Prague community.

Residents from this area have utilized the Cleary Lake Regional Park in Prior Lake for years, and a pass there has also given residents the opportunity to visit other parks in the Three Rivers Park District, in Hennepin and Carver counties. They have some of the best facilities in the area for swimming, picnics and other recreational activities. But in southern Scott County, there has been a lack of recreational facilities for the general public.

While planning for the park is still in the early stages, the fact that there are several sellers willing to give up development opportunities for the land in order to preserve it for park use is encouraging. Developing a park takes time... It has been a little more than two years since the county acquired land for Doyle-Kennefick Regional Park in Cedar Lake Township, and it will be several years before the park is developed for general use, but the first step - acquiring the land - is the most important.

Parks are an important resource for a community. They give people the opportunity to enjoy nature and relax. By acquiring this land now, before development further raises the price of land in the area, the county will ensure future generations will have continued use of these resources for years to come.
