A celebration of a 'wonderful' priest and parish

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

St. John's Church at Union Hill celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 30, what Archbishop Harry Flynn called a wonderful priest and parish.

The archbishop was among several dignitaries who were at the event, celebrating Father Elgar Bockenfeld's years of service to St. John's and St. Benedict's Catholic Churches. St. John's was filled with people there to observe the 62nd anniversary of Father Elgar's ordination, his 90th birthday and the church's 140th anniversary.

Throughout the service, Archbishop Flynn recognized the parishioners of St. John's, located five miles west of New Prague, for their strong faith, their service to the church and passing their beliefs on to their children. The archbishop also recognized Father Elgar, noting that their devotion and enthusiasm was an example of your priestly life with these people.

During the service, there was an offer of thanks for all the weddings, baptisms and first communions that Father Elgar has performed. Over the years that has been many as he has been pastor of St. John's for about 40 years and St. Benedict for 38 years.
