Changing lives in Guatemala

In addition to helping lives in Montgomery, Dr. Seth Huiras is helping lives around the world. 
 
Earlier this summer, Huiras ventured to Central America from his Montgomery dental office to help the impoverished people of Antigua, Guatemala and its remote village of San Rafael. He went with Dr. Stephen Humbert, a dentist from Hastings, who has been taking dentists, hygienists, and students to the area for the last 10 years for the organization, Common Hope or as the natives say, “Familias des Esperanzas". 
 
The bug to help impoverished people bit Huiras when he was a dental student at St. Olaf College. During a January term, he was one of 16 students chosen to work on epidemiology, global health and international service work in different parts of Peru. 
 
“We went to orphanages, and worked with two dentists to set up pediatric and dental clinics,” Huiras said. “From that experience, it planted the seed that I’m hooked on, the need to do this kind of work for the rest of my life.”
