Charlotte Houn is Torchlight button winner
The Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Committee had a tough job in selecting this year’s button winner. After going through several entries drawn by TCU and HRS fourth graders, they chose Charlotte Houn’s colorful Christmas bear to represent the annual holiday event.
Committee Member Neaner Kriha said they picked Charlotte’s design because it was different and really stood out. “You can tell by looking at it that she spent a lot of time on it,” Kriha said. “It’s unique.”
Charlotte, daughter of Jason and Jenny Houn, said she got the idea to draw a bear when her art teacher, Mrs. Woratschka, was listing Christmas items that would be good for their button designs. When drawing it, she decided to add the letter “T” to its hat and to one of the gifts, which she said stands for many things. Initially she added it for her older sister, Taylor, who is away at college, and missed by Charlotte. She decided the “T” could also stand for “Torchlight” and “Teddy”.
The souvenir buttons with Charlotte’s design will be sold to help raise money for next year’s event. They go on sale Friday, Nov. 1 and will be sold at the Happy Hour Bar, the Monty Bar & Hotel, Neaner’s White Front, American Legion, Classic Creations, Herrmann Drug, LaNette’s Antiques & Coffee, Franke’s Bakery, CornerStone State Bank and Frandsen Bank & Trust.
For winning the contest, Charlotte will get to ride in the 21st Annual Torchlight Parade with the grand marshals, on a float decorated to match her button. It is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, and will be followed by a fireworks display.
Nominate grand marshals
You get to nominate the grand marshals of the parade. When you purchase a button, you can enter the name of a Montgomery area second grade boy or girl and put your name into a drawing for Monty Bucks.
Also, it’s not too late to sponsor, donate or enter a parade unit. If interested, contact Neaner at 507-364-9393 or email Jake at email@example.com.
