Cities set preliminary tax levies for 2011

The New Prague and Elko New Market city councils recently set their preliminary 2011 levies.
City councils must set their preliminary property tax levies in September, with the final levies set for December. When approving the final levy, the council cannot raise them above the preliminary figure set in September.
New Prague
On a 3-2 vote, New Prague approved a preliminary levy of approximately $3.8 million. Voting in favor were Mayor W.A. Bink Bender and council members Kay Wilcox and Mark Bartusek. Council members Jim Kratochvil and Kristin Guerrette cast no votes.
Last year's the council set a levy of $3.625 million, meaning this year's levy is an increase of about 4.8 percent.
The council also set its annual Truth in Taxation hearing for 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, with a continuation hearing on Monday, Dec. 13, if necessary.
Elko New Market
Elko New Market unanimously approved a preliminary levy of $1.8 million. Its Truth in Taxation hearing will be held Thursday, Dec. 16. December. Last year the council approved a levy of $1.7 million.
