City Council changes golf board representative

In a unanimous decision at its Monday, Sept. 20, meeting, the New Prague City Council changed its representative for the City's Golf Board. Council member Mark Bartusek will replace Mayor W.A. Bink Bender.

At a meeting on August 2, the council had discussed a replacement on the board for former council member Ken Betterton. Mayor Bender appointed himself.

Bartusek brought the item up for discussion. He noted due to his job schedule he hasn't been serving on any city boards or commissions. He stated the golf board was one he had expressed interest in and asked why he couldn't be the council's representative?

Mayor Bender explained that first choice for boards and commissions is based on the seniority of council members. He said when he appointed himself to the golf board he didn't hear anything. If Bartusek wasn't happy with it, he was OK with revisiting it.

Council member Kay Wilcox believed Bender should remain on the board. Due to the unique environment, she thought it was crucial. Wilcox made a motion for Bender to remain as the representative, which died for the lack of a second.

Council member Kristin Guerrette thought they would discuss who would be the most logical choice to be on the board. She felt it was stacked one way, although it could be argued that the board will then be stacked the other way.

City Administrator Mike Johnson explained the city's charter provides for an appointment by the mayor with approval by the council.

Bender recommended a motion he remain, which had no second.

Council member Jim Kratochvil made a motion to appoint Bartusek, since he will be on the council for two more years. The motion was approved.
