City Council tables golf club budget

By Patrick Fisher

The New Prague City Council had a variety of items to take care of at its Monday meeting.

One of the items was a discussion about the 2005 budget for the New Prague Golf Club, which was tabled to the council’s first meeting in May.

Mayor Craig S. Sindelar said that the New Prague Golf Board has been dealing with a variety of items including the challenges of balancing the budget, expenses, downturns in club memberships and reorganizing.

Sindelar and New Prague City Administrator Jerry Bohnsack have discussed possible solutions and one was presented to the golf board on Monday afternoon. Sindelar said that the board agreed to table the budget and wait to present it to the council at a later time.

The solution is to rearrange some of the staff members at the golf club without having to let anyone go.

Bohnsack said it may not be the least expensive solution, but at this time, it’s the best way for them to go. He said that there are those who want the club to be able to turn things around in the next year, but he felt that doing it in two years was more realistic.

Community Gardens

Jane Sherack presented a proposal to the council for community gardens, which would be located on a portion of the plot of land next to Philipps Square Apartments and behind Wells Fargo Bank. The land is owned by the city, which hopes to use it in the future.

While the plans for the gardens are still being finalized, at this time it was proposed to take up an area of approximately 20 feet with wood chips being laid down in the garden area and wooden boards being placed down around the area. Wells Fargo Bank will sponsor the gardens, while a committee will oversee the gardens.

Sherack said that Philipps Square Apartments felt it would be a good project for its residents. She knew of a few people who are interested in participating in the project.

In discussing the project, the city would continue mowing the majority of the lot while the committee would oversee the maintenance of the community gardens.

The consensus of the council was that the final details could be worked out between Sherack and city staff.
