City receives update on Village St.

By Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

Making a private road into a public street is not an easy undertaking, but the city of New Prague does have the process underway for Village Street SE.

During its Tuesday, Jan. 3, meeting, the New Prague City Council was updated on the status of Village Street SE. Located in Prague Estates on the east side of town, the city is working with two homeowners associations and individual property owners on the project.

As part of the work, the city will be doing surveys to find out what the soil is like under the road and where the utilities are located. City Planning Director Ken Ondich said the survey tests will have to wait until the frost is out of the ground.

Under the proposal for turning Village Street into a public street, one suggested item was having the associations and property owners pay 100 percent for any improvement work on Village Street SE. Ondich said that may not need to be part of the proposal depending on the state of the soil and utilities, but the city won't know until after the survey tests are done.

The city has gathered estimates for dedicating Village Street SE as a public street. Among the work to be done is surveying costs, legal costs, pavement and sub-base testing and televising and cleaning of the sanitary sewer and storm sewer. The estimated cost ranges from $13,605 to $19,605. If the cost was divided between 33 properties it would be $412 to $594 per property.

Ondich said the information has been provided to the associations and the property owners. As of Tuesday, Jan. 10, city staff has not heard back from them.
