Cold weather and the one that got away

More cold weather greeted area anglers this past week and that made good ice even better. I would have thought the cold slowed anglers down but it didn't. I fished early in the week, fully taking advantage of the warmer weather, but then plans came up to fish during the cold weekend. Dennis and Brandon Palma had invited me to join them for a day of fishing Friday.

Dennis spent the last year-and-a-half building a nice fish house and was eager to show it to me. We met on Lake Mazaska about 2 p.m. on Friday. I had fished the lake earlier and showed Dennis where to set the house for some crappie action. The house took just minutes to set up. Good thing for that, it was really cold out. Once we settled in and warmed up we started to fish and catch crappies. The house was nice and warm as well as comfortable. Later we had venison chops, gravy and dumplings for supper. We watched T.V. and played cards. As we settled in to spend the night the cold made music as the ice thundered most of the night. When we woke up the next morning, I was surprised as other anglers showed up on the cold lake. The cold didn't slow them down at all. After rolls and coffee we fished until noon and called it a day. The house quickly popped up and we were gone. I forgot how nice a big house can be. It was fun, thanks again Dennis. By the way, we caught a bunch of crappies.

I have a story about the big one that got away. Kyle DeCoux, who is twelve years old was fishing with his Dad and friends on French Lake. He had just caught a crappie and put his line back down when another fish hit. He fought the fish several minutes and finally exhausted it. It was a monster walleye. It laid below the ice. He couldn't pull it up with the four pound line. His Dad ran from house to house looking for a gaff. Finally someone tried to grab the monster fish. It gave a final surge, broke the line and it was gone. The anglers stood in disbelief! Kyle will have to try and catch this big fish another time. I feel for Kyle.
