Cold weather greets area anglers

By Bill Bartusek Jr., Outdoors Columnist

Another cold weekend greeted area anglers as we head into the end of January. Not only was it cold again but it was windy too. That made an outdoor experience even colder. Fishing has been fairly slow statewide, from what I've been hearing. I took a couple of friends to the cabin and fishing was slow there too.

Deep snow also made travel on the ice quite the experience. We sat in the cabin and watched trucks get stuck and work for hours to get out. Our fishing experience was slow and cold with lows around 20 below. It took most of the day to warm to four or five below. We did find some panfish but they were small. It was cold and difficult to cut holes and look for bigger fish. I'm waiting for warmer weather so I can do some scouting on the lake. I hope I don't have to wait long.

Farewell to a friend

I'd like to take a moment to say good-bye to an old friend. A few years ago while working for K.A. Witt Construction with Bill Sticha, we headed north to work on the Witt's new cabin. I took my boat along like I always do to fish after hours. Bill brought his equipment along to fish with me. It was fall and the fish were in a mood to bite. We had one special evening catching big pike and bass, cast after cast.

Not all went well, as Bill lost a rod and reel overboard. It didn't seem to bother him because the bite was so good. Eventually we hooked something and pulled a rod and reel from the lake. It wasn't his but it was a nice outfit. That was the only time I spent fishing with Bill. It was a special day for us both.

Now that Bill is gone I know in God's net he was big enough to keep.

Thanks for some great memories Bill... Marty, I do know just how you feel.
