The monthly update from the human services department and a presentation on the 800 Megahertz (MHz) Radio System were major agenda items for the Tuesday, March 16 meeting of the Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners.

Human Services

Human Services Director Sue Rynda gave her report and announced Kudos Awards to Robin Allen, financial worker, and Leigh Jagusch, social worker, for outstanding work in their respective positions.

Rynda also informed the board that the Mankato Crisis Center will be closed in early May, and adult mental health programs will see reductions, as part of budget cutbacks coming out of St. Paul. The crisis center, a $1.5 million program, has been used for treatment of patients in lieu of hospitalization. Rynda said she was submitting a proposal to operate a locally-governed crisis center, which would be more cost effective than the state program.

Rynda also distributed a letter received from Human Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman, commending Le Sueur County for exemplary performance in meeting department of human services financial reporting requirements for 2009.

Radio System

Jail Administrator Larry Sycks appeared with Jeff Nelson of PSC Alliance Inc. of Minneapolis, an independent consulting service specializing in communications. PSC is assisting the county in implementing the ARMER (Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response) for the mandated 800 Megahertz Radio System. Nelson showed slides of existing radio towers and other proposed locations for complete communications networking. He said the Le Sueur/Henderson area is a major concern because of the river valley terrain, but study of the situation is ongoing.

The 800 MHz system will have an estimated capital budget of $2.36 million, but grants are available, particularly in the areas of police and fire protection.

The board also:

• Received information from Election Administrator Carol Blaschko. Filing dates for county commissioner and other elected officials are May 18 to June 1. Primary election is August 10, general election November 2.
