Congregation breaks ground for New Prague church
By small and simple things are great things come to pass.
President Steve Mitton of New Prague’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints used those words from the Book of Mormon Saturday morning during a groundbreaking ceremony at the church’s building site, in the Raven Stream Acres subdivision on the west side of New Prague.
There are 75 families who make up the New Prague branch of the church. which is an offshoot of a church in Burnsville. They are hoping to be in their new building within a year.
President Darrell Haskin of the Burnsville church joked that the cool weather facing those at the ceremony was God’s way of making sure we have a stiff upper lip.
He added that the new church is A testament to each of you who are faithful. I hope that New Prague will find us to be wonderful neighbors. We look for that which is good.
Haskin concluded by saying the new building is an outward manifestation of the inward commitment of the congregation.
The New Prague branch has been meeting for several years at the New Prague City Hall. Members of the congregation, come from New Prague, Jordan, Belle Plaine, New Market, Montgomery, Spring Lake and Elko.
There was no formal groundbreaking, however each family was asked to take turns turning over the dirt on the building site. In addition, a golden shovel was presented with the church’s name and date, and everyone present was asked to sign the shovel. It will be put on display in the church when the building is completed.
