The road and bridge construction season is currently at a busy pace in Le Sueur County.

According to County Engineer Darrell Pettis, several projects are underway or have been completed this summer.

• Reconstruction of Le Sueur County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 28 adjoining Rice CSAH 2 from Highway 13-21 east to Highway 19 at Lonsdale is underway, with 95 percent of the earthwork completed. The reconstructed 10-ton bituminous roadway between Montgomery and New Prague will provide a major east-west truck route from Highway 13-21 east to Lonsdale and Interstate 35, since Highway 19 through Lonsdale is also 10-ton. Pettis said the road will provide the advantage of access during spring restrictions. The project, a cooperative agreement between the counties, involves approximately three miles in Le Sueur County and four miles in Rice, which is the fiscal agent. The total project cost is $6.3 million, or $900,000 per mile. Pettis said funding is coming from bonding money and federal transportation dollars. He anticipates the roadway will be surfaced this year, although Rice County Highway Engineer Dennis Luebbe has said the project is behind schedule because of the wet spring conditions. Contractors on the project are Southern Minnesota Construction (SMC) of Mankato, Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye and Max Johnson Trucking of Le Center. Le Sueur County has 267 miles of roads designated as CSAH, making them eligible for federal tax money, state gas tax and license funding.

• Grading of County Road 136 from Highway 99 to CSAH 26 west of Montgomery is 99 percent complete, with final aggregate application, seeding and erosion work remaining. The four-mile north-south road has been widened for future bituminous surfacing. Barnett Bros. of Kilkenny is the contractor on the $610,000 project.

• Work has been completed on installation of a box culvert under CSAH 3 south of Montgomery and the bridge is open. The $130,000 project, located one mile south of Highway 99, is funded by bridge bonding dollars and was completed by Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye.

• Bituminous surfacing is underway on CSAH 11 from CSAH 32 north of Le Center to Highway 19 west of Union Hill. Crane Creek Construction of Owatonna is the contractor for the $270,000.

• River Ridge Construction of Morton has the $780,000 contract for two bridge projects—over CSAH 15 five miles north of Cleveland and over CSAH 3 just south of Kilkenny. Work on the #15 bridge is scheduled to start the Tuesday after Labor Day, with #3 to follow depending on the weather.
