Council deals with continuing baseball park improvements

The New Prague City Council unanimously approved at its Monday, March 20, meeting a resolution approving plans and specifications for improvement work to the New Prague Memorial Park Baseball Field and an ordering for the advertisement for bids on the project.

The improvement work to the facility is in preparation of New Prague hosting the 2018 Minnesota Amateur Baseball State Tournament in late August of 2018.

The resolution was tabled at the council’s Monday, March 6, meeting. Brian Gjerde who is doing the architectural work on the project, explained the reason for the delay was that they had to make changes to designs for the press box to allow for access to it. At the earlier meeting there were concerns about accessibility to the press box under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Gjerde said other improvements include those to the backstop and fencing, new dugouts as well as the construction of two new light poles. A new irrigation system will also be installed. The improvements are estimated at $300,000.

Mayor Chuck Nickolay asked if the old irrigation system will be used. Gjerde replied that that old system will be abandoned.

Bids for the improvements are scheduled to be opened on Thursday, April 13, and then will be presented to the council at its Monday, May 1, meeting. The construction is scheduled to start on July 10. The New Prague Orioles will find another local field to use for the season.
