Council hears from sheriff, discusses public forum

Discussion on police activity, the public forum on the police department’s future and a property in Montgomery that housed a dangerous criminal were topics at the Montgomery City Council meeting on Monday.

In his monthly report to the County, Sheriff Brett Mason brought the council up to speed on what has been happening in the city and in its police department. Mason said they have been investigating a child protection abuse case, a neglect case and a baby born to a woman using methamphetamine.

He also said the Department has also been investigating the theft by swindle from Turek Auction. The Sheriff said the department has spent considerable time on the case that involved a man who traveled to real auctions in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Iowa, and stole bidder’s numbers to swindle antiques. Mason said officers went to the man’s residence in Iowa to discover a 100-foot long pole shed full of stolen antiques, including some from the local auction service.

Mason said the man has been charged with a felony, and he is hoping to extradite him to Minnesota.

The Sheriff also said they have executed another search warrant for controlled substances in Montgomery, which makes approximately six warrants for Montgomery in the last eight weeks, he noted.

He also discussed a tax forfeited residence at 610 2nd Street NE that he called “mayhem” on Friday, June 16. Mason said upon inspecting the forfeited property, officers discovered a number of people living in the empty house, including a suspect that had been wanted on multiple charges in the county. “It turned to pure mayhem. There were controlled substances flying all over the place,” Mason said of the scene. “This individual had been hiding out in the city for months in that house. There was personal property, pit bulls, and controlled substances inside. This has been a problem residence for years.”

After fleeing the officers on foot, the individual with multiple charges was apprehended at the Montgomery National Golf Course.
