Council trying to trim cost of treatment plant

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

During a Monday, March 17, workshop, the New Prague City Council discussed trimming the cost of the city's new wastewater treatment plant. As proposed, approximately $2.3 million is to be cut, which brings the current estimate of the project down to $27 million.

Members of the engineering design team of Bolton & Menk, city staff and personnel from Rice Lake Construction met earlier, reviewing areas where cuts could be made. Eighty-two items were identified and then reduced to a list of 13. Those include changes in materials, equipment modifications and deferring some construction to a later time. Of the 13 items to be reduced, four will have the most impact - reducing the initial filtration capacity, constructing two biological aerated filter cells at a later date, decreasing the initial capacity for dried biosolids and downsizing the facility's garage. These cuts result in $913,000 to $87,400.

I think we needed to scale it down a bit
