County Board denies rezone for local ag cooperative

The Le Sueur County Commissioners were agreeable to all but one of their agenda items at their Tuesday, Sept. 6 board meeting.

River Country Cooperative (RCC) and landowners, Dennis and Cynthia Krautkremer of Montgomery, requested to rezone 30 acres located at the intersection of Highways 13 and 99 in Montgomery Township, from Agricultural District to General Industrial District.

"The question before this board is do we allow spot zoning," said Commissioner Steve Rohlfing of Madison Lake, as he moved to deny the request and not allow spot zoning. On a 4 to 1 roll call vote, the Le Sueur County Board denied the rezoning request. Commissioner Lance Wentzel of Le Center voted against the motion.

Rohlfing stated that although he does not agree with the current ordinance, he does not support spot zoning. Rohlfing, along with Commissioner Dave Gliszinski of New Prague, recommended that the Board and the County's Planning and Zoning Board develop a plan that works with cities, townships and businesses, so that businesses like this can build and so that they remain in the county.
