Couple make 15th gallon donations together
Like many couples Clarence and Joanie Tupy of New Prague do many things together. On Wednesday, Jan. 17, the couple were donating blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive at the Knights of Columbus Hall in New Prague. They were both donating their 15th gallon.
“We usually go together,” said Clarence. “We try to give blood twice a year.” He explained their donating of blood goes back to 1966, before they were married.
Joanie said their daughter (Barb Ulschmid) needed a blood transfusion when she was born. “So that’s been an incentive to give,” added Joanie.
They were among several people making donations at the drive, hosted by the KC Auxiliary, which was marking its 10th year of helping at the event. Mike Bartusek of New Prague was donating for the 25th time. When asked about donating he replied, “Because I can.”
“I’ve given eight gallons so far,” said Gary Pavek of rural New Prague. “I feel a need to contribute,” he said, adding that he’s also listed as an organ donor.
Ron Weiers of New Prague was working on six gallons. He said, “My mom started donating and I got the idea from her and I just want to help other people.”
