The next court appearance for Kathleen Marie Novotny, 58, of Le Center, a former employee of the City of New Prague, has been rescheduled to 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

Novotny is charged with three counts of felony theft by swindle. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and/or a $20,000 fine.

Novotny was originally set to appear in Scott County Court in Shakopee on Tuesday, Sept. 9. According to courthouse staff the attorneys in the case requested on Thursday, Sept. 4, to reschedule the case.

Detective Luke Hennen with the Scott County Sheriff's Office investigated the case after auditors alerted the county of discrepancies in the city's payroll for 2007. Allegedly, Novotny paid herself for extra time over a three-year period and put amounts into her FICA medical insurance and Public Employment Retirement Administration (PERA) accounts. It was found the overpayments totalled $18,573.

Novotny was placed on administrative leave when the discrepancies were found and then resigned from city staff in April, 2008 at the request of the city.
