Cpl. Lee Pieper receives commendation

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

Cpl. Lee Pieper is currently home enjoying the holidays with family and friends in the New Prague area, but while serving in Iraq, the Marine was recognized twice for his actions.

The son of Mary Pieper and a 2001 graduate of New Prague High School, Cpl. Pieper received a Certificate of Commendation and a Combat Meritorious while doing his duties as a tank driver with the Third Platoon, Company A, First Tank Battalion, during a seven-month tour in northern Iraq.

He explained the certificate was for when he and his platoon were patrolling the border between Iraq and Syria. They found a half buried tarp and began investigating the area around it. They eventually dug up two enemy weapons caches that contained 5,000 pounds of homemade explosives, two surface-to-air missiles, 46 rocket-propelled grenades and more than 2,000 small arms rounds. While the military took the majority of munitions, the homemade explosives were destroyed since they could be unstable.

Pieper said he's more honored to have received the Combat Meritorious since it shows he kept his bearing in battle and remained calm.

Iraq has slowed down
